World's Chemical Weapons Watchdog Finds Syria's Russian Backed Forces Responsible for Chlorine Attack on Civilian Areas in 2018
Syrian army helicopter dropped toxic chlorine gas cylinders on civilian areas that killed 43 in Douma, Syria, in 2018. The attack affected dozens more, and was part of a Russian backed major offensive by President Bashar al-Assad’s forces.
OPCW Investigation and Identification Team (IIT)’s third report concludes that there are reasonable grounds to believe that the Syrian Arab Air Forces were the perpetrators of the chemical weapons attack on 7 April 2018 in Douma, Syria. According to the report, "Based on the holistic assessment of the large volume and wide range of evidence gathered and analysed, and on the convergence of the outcomes of such corroborated multiple analyses, the IIT concluded that, on the evening of 7 April 2018, at least one Syrian helicopter, flown from a Russian controlled base on the outskirts of Damascus was responsible for the attack. The full OPCW report can be found here. Also of note, only two countries (Russia and China) vetoed a UN Security Council resolution to refer the incident and the Assad regime to the International Criminal Court in the Hague.
